Part II: Perth – Thornlie/Armadale
The Thornlie/Armadale line runs through East Perth, an inner suburb of Perth, WA. Similar to the first project, the architectural insertion grew organically from issues observed within the site.
Picadilly Square lies to the north of McIver station, part of a quiet business area, and made up of social service buildings and tertiary institutions. The site significantly lacks eateries and a space for leisure, which leaves the streets quiet. Businesses suffer and close, and visitors to the area do not have anything to do whilst they wait within the crowded foyer of the social services buildings.
The Pantry is a partially self-sustaining eatery that invites members of the community to participate in the planting and harvesting of crops grown in the open garden. Easily accessible via train, it is a space for leisure and communal activities, activating the spaces around it.
